Julian Whitaker, M.D. has developed a weight loss program that appears easy to follow and produces good results. It consists of skipping breakfast. (I know that flies against conventional weight loss thinking.)
The caveat is skipping breakfast must be accompanied by an exercise program in the morning. Sleeping results in a natural fast on average of 10 to 12 hours. This means the readily available glucose is used up and energy must come from fat burning.
The extra demands for energy through exercise force the body to burn fats. If breakfast is consumed, especially orange juice and carbohydrates, the glucose now becomes readily available and the body will naturally take the easiest and most available energy source…and not burn fats. This occurs because very little glucose can be stored by your body. Fat beds are the storage warehouses for energy, but fats are more complex to metabolize and convert into energy. They need oxygen, enzymes and hormones to convert into energy.
People on the program report that hunger and increased appetite are not a problem. Of course you cannot pig out and consume extra food at lunch and dinner.
Dr. Whitaker also recommends other supplements that help metabolize fats during this weight loss program. These include glycine, Brindall Trim (with L-carnitine…the fat shuttle bus for fats into the cells) and metabolic essentials that contain magnesium, vitamine D-3 and green tea extract.
The fasting before noon, along with the exercise and supplements has proven itself effective in only 4 months. Most who adhere to the program want to continue it because of the ease of compliance and excellent results of weight loss. After 3 weeks of discipline with the program it become easier to comply with.
Dr. Whitaker outlines the specifics of the program as follows.
- Daily mini-fast before lunch
- Continuance of current medication but monitored for the reduced need
- Continuance of your regular supplements
- Continuance of the lunch and dinner meals with the same amount of calories…but keep carbohydrates low
- Take 5 grams of glycine (triggers release of glucagon hormone for fat metabolism) in water along with 4 capsules of Brindall Trim prior to the exercise
- Build up to 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic (with oxygen…no gasping for air) exercise. Do the exercise the first thing in the morning. Brisk walking or stair climbing will accomplish this.
- Eat a healthy diet (low fat, low carbohydrates with both lunch and dinner)
- Take 2 capsules of Metabolic Essentials at both meals
- Chart your exercise program and diet consumption. A compliance log is available at drwhitaker.com/challenge/
